Train One, Express Refrigerated Cars

Refrigerated express car No. 2021

While researching I found in the publication "Silk Trains of North America", by Alan Vanderpool, a reference to the August 1924 Silk train run. "In August 1924, silk loaded aboard an Admiral Oriental Line ship in Yokohama was conveyed to New York City (7,397 miles distant) in 13 days, four hours and 25 minutes. The silk was loaded on two Great Northern trains at Seattle WA. The first train was made up of 10 refrigerator cars." In the article "Silk Trains on the Great Northern Railway" by Gordon L. Iseminger,  refers to the the silk train that left Seattle on August 2nd of 1924 identifying the  specific express car that had a failed bearing on the trip as Car No. 2063. This car is identified in the Great Northern Historical Society Reference Sheet No. 165, June 1990 as being a refrigerated express car built by Barney & Smith and delivered to the Great Northern on June 4, 1914.  So I believe it is valid to presume that Car No. 2021 pictured here is representative of the refrigerated cars used in Train One on August 13, 1924.

Car No. 2021 Barney & Smith, Delivered: 5/3/1912, Changed to: X-5029 6/1955, Retired: 7/1962
